Our Mission
We work hard to make sure every student is cared for and grows as a skater and person.
Therapeutic Skating began in 2008 when Jim O’Neill founded STARSkaters to provide on-ice experiences for individuals with disabilities. In 2009, he and fellow hockey players started offering skating lessons to disabled youth at Sugar Land Ice Center (SLICE). By May 2010, after organizing an event with the ARC of Ft. Bend County, O’Neill teamed up with B.L. Wylie, an experienced instructor passionate about teaching disabled youth to skate. Around the same time, Anthony Lo also began developing a class for his high school project.
With Wylie’s expert instructors and the guidance of US Figure Skating’s 14-level badge program, the Therapeutic Skating program quickly grew. Starting with just five students and seven coaches, it has since expanded, now offering one-on-one coaching for every student. The true champions of this program are the dedicated preteen, teen, and college-level volunteers who make it all possible.
